SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY

Rationale

A school uniform provides a sense of belonging, pride and identity in a school, as well as helping to develop organisational skills. An element of safety is achieved due to quick and easy identification of St. George International School & Preschool students, especially when on excursions.

UNIFORM FOR GRADES XI - XII

Students in Grade 11 and 12 do not have a prescribed uniform, instead students are expected to set an example to the rest of the School through their high standard of business-like dress and the way they present themselves.

All students in Grade 11 and 12 are expected to follow the guidance of ‘smart business-like attire’.

Boys should wear trousers, collared shirt, tie, jacket/blazer, black or brown formal shoes, jumper (optional), waistcoat (optional).

Girls should wear trousers (must reach the ankle), skirt (no shorter than 2 cm above the knee and not figure hugging), blouse, jacket/blazer, black or brown formal shoes (maximum heel height 5cm with no points), formal sleeved dress (summer time only).

The following are not allowed: jeans/denim, offensive slogans/words, revealing/transparent clothing, overly colourful or "loud" clothing not appropriate for a business-like environment.

Boys and girls sports uniform for all grades

Shorts or tracksuit bottoms, t-shirt, tracksuit top, sports shoes, socks.

Students are expected to come to school dressed in either official or casual uniform and change into their sports uniform for PE. For hygiene reasons students should change back into their official or casual uniform after PE.

Makeup, jewellery, hair, watches, etc…

SGIS understands that students may wish to express a degree of individuality. The school do not want to be over restrictive and therefore adopts a ‘reactive’ position. Students are welcome to express themselves as they wish provided they follow the following basic guidelines. Restrictions may be put in place if deemed necessary in the future.

Girls may wear light makeup if necessary. It should be subtle and not easily noticeable.

Hair can be worn either tied up, or loose, except during PE or Science where it will be tied up

For students after 8 grade nails may have subtle, discrete polish. No extreme colours or false nails.

Girls may have discrete ear piercings. No lose or hanging decoration may be worn.

Nothing should be worn that could constitute a choking, or strangling hazard.

Watches may be worn but the school takes no responsibility for damage that may occur, they should be removed for PE. Smart Watches are forbidden.

Violation of policy

Students who come to school with the wrong uniform will receive a ‘U’ in the planner. This should be monitored by the class masters every morning.

- 1 ‘U’ – Warning.

- 2 ‘U’s – a letter is sent home to the parents, reminding them of the policy.

- 3 ‘U’s – Student is removed from classroom and supervised by a member of staff until the parent either a) brings in the correct uniform, or b) takes the student home.

Lost uniforms

Items of clothing which are left unattended may be placed in the lost property section for collection. Parents are encouraged to label their child’s uniform with a permanent marker or sewn in name tag on the collar or waist to enable quick and easy identification of uniform items.

Parents are also asked to check labels on uniform items at home in case of students accidentally bringing home items of clothing which are not theirs.
