Sound Practical with Grade 4

What might an unusual Science lesson ‘sound’ like? Last Thursday, under the sweet symphony of glass, metal and euphonic voices, children were exploring the nature of sound through several experiments. After Mr. Hill’s demonstration, students discovered physical phenomena through three peculiar tasks:

  • making a wine glass ‘sing’ by watering their finger and applying circular friction to the rim in order to understand how sound varies from high- to low-pitch;
  • hearing a wire hanger’s ring simply by wrapping a string around their index fingers and gently dinging it with a fork, thus grasping how sound travels quicker through solid material as opposed to air;
  • and last but not least – pouring water between several narrow-neck glass bottles to match all the right notes A, B, C, D, E, F, G and synchronously play ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’.

This creative class ended with a mini visual quiz. Children had a guess at the source of random short sounds, which they could visualise only after giving their supposition to the teacher and the audience.
